Hey Aaron

I know you prefer guns to blades. But I thought I'd show you my primary home defense tool. LOL. and no I do not make a habit of cutting paper, it's the only way to show it's a live blade.

LOL, not that skinny. I swear I have reverse anorexia. I see myself and think "GODDAMNIT SUNUVABITCH, I'm doing all this dieting and working out and I'm still fat how is that possible?"

Nicely done! Paper is fine for the demonstration, and impressive. What kind of sword is that, where did you get it, and how do you keep it sharp?

Yes, I prefer guns for every scenario that also involves having ammo, but I also have a love for blades. I've got at least one sword that could take an edge.

That's not a knife....That's a katana! Nice blade Royce! Do any study with it? Iaido, Kenjutsu, etc.

Whaddya gonna do about the blood? Even my double barreled 18 1/4 inch side by side won't make that much of a mess if I have to use it. Blades make blood - lots of blood...

Aaron, knives or short swords are nice for in the home. Samurai had them, called wakizachi, they are shorter than Royce's katana.

A good knife with a point and edge (or two) would also work very well at short range.

Hell, I just use a piece of re-rod. Hurts like hell and no blood!

Still gotta stick with handguns, Jim, but wouldn't mind having a long blade that sharp. Swinging that thing with even a little bit of coordination would be wicked.

Its a Paul Chen practical pro. I don't have the expertese to keep it sharp. so I take it to a knife shop and they send it out. It is primalrily a cutting bladeused for cutting rolled up straw mat called tameshigiri. I've used it for that a couple of times. There is a definate art to it that I don't have down. If you see someone who does, it look like magic and the cutting power is phenomonal.

aikubido, no I learned a couple forms doing Korean Tang So Do a when I was a teenager. I don't remember them now of course. Kenjutsu is something I am going to take after nursing school is over.

I saw a cutting demo in St. Paul about 10 years ago with Katanas. Way cool. I'm going to look up Paul Chen.

Cool Royce, I have seen it, up close and personal. My Aikido Sensei invited Obata sensei to do a demo and I was on the mat while he did kata and cuts. He's the mean looking sword guy in the Nat. Geo. bits about martial arts and has been in a few movies too - he has 5 different black belts.

I've seen him cut bamboo and wooden training swords like you cut that paper. Awesome!

Smart to let a pro keep it sharp Royce. Those things aren't cheap! And you want an edge on it if you might use it for real. It'll cut like butt-ah!

I've seen Obata, but only on video. Seems like the real deal.

Truth be told, Royce, I'd rather have a katana than a taiji sword for real usage.

I'm with ya Aaron, no sense depending on a knife in a gunfight. I grew up in Detroit, so I know the value of superior firepower! The fear factor alone is great. Like Croc Dundee says...That's not a knife. THIS, is a knife!

It's a trip to see someone who can cut do it for real. I can't get the blade at the correct angle to prevent a lot of "feedback" in the handle. Instruction is needed before I try it again!

I went out on the mat to clean up the pieces of bamboo and EVERY one had a slight curve to the surface that was cut. It was not completely flat. So the circling principle was definitely in use!
